The challenges that the country faced this 2013 - from the earthquake in Bohol and super-typhoon “Yolanda” in Leyte - have taught Toni Gonzaga lessons that would serve her well for years to come.

She noted in an interview that she learned “to be more selfless, be more compassionate, be more aware of what’s going on and to reach out (to other people).

“Tigilan muna ‘yung pagiging makasarili (at) isipin ‘yung kapwa natin at makatulong,” she reiterated.

Thankful for a showbiz career in full swing, the multimedia star nevertheless noted, “It’s so hard sometimes to celebrate the personal successes or achievement na nakukuha mo because of what’s going on around you.”

If there’s one thing she realized this year, it’s “God is good. If you really focus your personal life and self with God, everything will fall into place.”

New Year’s resolution

Apparently, Toni is not one who makes a list of her New Year’s Resolution or a list of changes she wants to make. Instead, she writes down the things she wishes to accomplish for the year – a tradition she practices with her sister, Alex Gonzaga.

Her goals vary from material, personal, family and work, for instance: “Business na gusto ko makuha” or “a new chapter in my career na gusto kong marating.”

As to her preference to make goals rather than promises, she said, “Walang nasusunod sa plano ko eh.”

In 2014, “I will just go with whatever He’s going to give me and bless me. Kung anong mga proyektong ibigay, gagawin ko nalang ang best ko, so when the next opportunities come I will have a feeling na I earned it at deserve ko siya,” she shared.

She admitted, however, that “Mahirap kasi ngayon mag-personal wish sa pinagdaanan ng bansa natin.”

On-screen chemistry

In January 2014, Toni will headline their first-ever sitcom together on ABS-CBN titled “Home Sweetie Home” with former onscreen partner John Lloyd Cruz. They will play a married couple.

This is actually the first time the actress-host accepted a wife role.

“This project came in the right age. Pwede na talaga akong gumanap na may asawa,” said the actress who is turning 30 on Jan. 20.

Mother roles, however, can wait. “Saka na, kapag mother na ako,” she said, laughing.

For Toni, one of the most challenging parts of doing the series was the intimate scene with Lloydie, with whom she last shared the screen in 2010’s “My Amnesia Girl.”

“Iba ’yung level ng comfortability namin sa isat-isa kasi hindi naman kami everyday nagkakasama sa work. (Ngayong) nagkasama kami ulit, nakaka-ilang ulit (kasi) gumagawa kami ng mga eksena na sweet pero eventually nawala na ang ilang,” said she.

She only has good words for Lloydie, describing him as a gentleman at “napaka-bait na tao,” adding that the actor brings out the best in her during tapings. Manila Bulletin
