Ladies for Rizal To Hold Declamation Contest In Honor of National Hero

The Ladies for Rizal New Jersey Chapter will hold a declamation contest to honor the memory and legacy of Dr. Jose P. Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines.  This contest is open to Grades 6 – 12 students in New Jersey and New York.  


The top three contestants will receive the following: First Prize -$300.00 and trophy; Second Prize - $200.00 and trophy; and Third Prize -$100.00 and trophy. Consolation cash prizes will also be awarded.

Deadline to register to join the competition is Tuesday, October 15. 

Dr Jose Rizal wrote Mi Ultimo Adiós, a poem written in Spanish, on the eve of his execution on December 30, 1896.  This poem was translated to English, My Final Farewell; Tagalog, Ang Aking Huling Paalam, and several other languages.  Contestants have a choice to recite the poem in Spanish, English or Tagalog. These poems are available online. 

“We want to impart to our community, particularly our young people, the life of Dr. Jose Rizal and the values he espoused and of which he made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Lady Eloisa Porto, current President of Ladies for Rizal.  “Through this declamation contest, we hope to challenge and inspire our youth and continue the legacy of our national hero.” 

Lady Dr. Vicky Rey is the Chairperson of the Declamation contest.  Semi-finals will take place November 9, 2013, at 10:00am, at the PACCAL office, located at 380 Monmouth St., Jersey City, NJ 07302.  The judges will choose the semifinalists from all registered participants who will recite from memory any version of the poem.  The finals will take place on November 16, 2013 at the Jersey City Council Chambers.
