‘Marvelous’ Marvin Sonsona promised to take a big bite of the Big Apple and nearly paid for it.

Sonsona appeared on his way to scoring a quickie after dropping Puerto Rican Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. in the first round of their 10-round contest for the North American Boxing Federation featherweight crown June 7 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

But Vazquez bounced back, survived the onslaught and even sprang back to life in the succeeding rounds although it wasn’t enough to sway two of the three judges at ringside.

Two judges saw it 96-92 for Sonsona, while the third had it 96-92 for Vazquez, who slowly eased himself back into the fight during the middle rounds when the Filipino began to fade.

Vazquez cried out after the decision was announced but it was evident that Sonsona had done enough to earn the split decision and get revenge.

The first time they fought four years ago, Vazquez knocked out Sonsona.

Since then, Sonsona has gained a lot of experience and even grew bigger than Vazquez.

Still, Sonsona didn’t look as if he is somebody to watch out for as evidenced by the overall sloppiness of his performance.

The crowd was so unforgiving that they applauded when the final bell sounded as it would herald the start of the main event featuring Sergio Martinez of Argentina and Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico.

At least, Sonsona is coming home victorious. Manila Bulletin
